BARRIE, Ont. – It took a few extra laps, but Jason Hathaway left Barrie Speedway with a win Saturday night. The Dutton, Ontario, native won the Wahta Springs 300 for the second year in a row. It marked Hathaways second NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 victory of the season and fifth of his career. Pole winner J.R. Fitzpatrick finished second, followed by D.J. Kennington, L.P. Dumoulin and Jeff Lapcevich. Joey McColm, Noel Dowler, Erica Thiering, Matthew Scannell and Alex Tagliani rounded out the top 10. Saturday was the best career finish for rookies Thiering and Scannell. Hathaway became the first back-to-back winner at the track since Scott Steckly won both series events at the .333-mile tri-oval in 2008. I knew in the end there, I wasnt going to give it up, no matter what it took, Hathaway said. It was a hell of a battle with J.R. [Fitzpatrick] tonight, and Im glad it was him and nobody else, because we come out smiling at the end and shaking hands, talking about it all week because he and I are real good buddies. An accident on the frontstretch involving Tagliani on Lap 298 set up the green-white-checkered finish attempt. Fitzpatrick, looking for his first Barrie win, got the edge on the restart from the outside row and led by a nose at the white flag, but ultimately couldnt overcome Hathaway for the checkered flag. I got the run I needed, going into Turn 3 (of the final lap) I was ahead and he shoved me up the hill just an extra little bit where I couldnt get to the throttle as soon as him, Fitzpatrick said. It was exciting for the fans. It was close, really close. The final margin of victory was a miniscule 0.121 seconds. With one race to go, Dumoulin now leads Fitzpatrick in the championship standings by a tally of 418-402. The Wahta Springs 300 will air on TSN5 on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. EDT, and on RDS2 on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series championship will be decided in the season finale on Saturday, Sept. 20 in the Pintys 250 at Kawartha Speedway in Fraserville, Ont. MORITZ, Switzerland -- Latvia won a four-man World Cup bobsled race Sunday, while the U.MELBOURNE, Australia - Elation turned to desolation for Daniel Ricciardo at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday after the Red Bull driver was stripped of his first podium finish due to a technical breach at Formula Ones season opener. Ricciardo initially finished second to Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg to become the first homegrown driver to take to the podium in the 29-year history of the Australian GP. The celebrations did not last long as F1 stewards said his car breached fuel-flow rules introduced this year which limit cars to 100 kilograms of fuel during the race. World motorsport governing body FIA subsequently disqualified Ricciardo , elevating McLaren drivers Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button to second and third. Red Bull immediately announced it will appeal. Shortly after the end of the race, FIA Formula One technical delegate Jo Bauer said Ricciardos car had "exceeded consistently the maximum allowed fuel flow" and referred the matter to stewards. More than three and a half hours later, after Ricciardo had left the track, the stewards disqualified the Australian saying Red Bull had not only breached technical regulations by exceeding the allowed fuel flow, but also had disregarded instructions before the race to change the fuel flow sensor and during the race to reduce the flow. The operation of the fuel-flow sensors had been a source of dispute between the teams and the FIA coming into the first race. After the findings, Red Bull ssaid "Inconsistencies with the FIA fuel flow meter have been prevalent all weekend up and down the pit lane.dddddddddddd The team and (engine-maker) Renault are confident the fuel supplied to the engine is in full compliance with the regulations." Horner further proclaimed the teams innocence to reporters saying; "It is no fault of Daniel. I dont believe it is the fault of the team." "I am extremely disappointed, quite surprised ... hopefully through the appeal process it will be quite clear that the car has conformed at all times to the regulations," he added. "We would not be appealing unless we were extremely confident that we have a defendable case." The Albert Park crowd earlier offered Ricciardo a thunderous applause as the stood on the podium in his first race with Red Bull. "Its a bit overwhelming for now, but just an unbelievable day," the 24-year-old said shortly after. Australia staged its first Grand Prix of the F1 era in Adelaide in 1985, with the 1986 edition marking the final race of Australian world championship winner Alan Jones. Mark Webbers first F1 race was the 2002 Australian GP, and since then Australian fans have waited impatiently for a top-three finish at Albert Park. Red Bull, last years constructors champions and a dominant force in F1 for the past four years, had a difficult time in preseason testing and little was expected from its first race of the season.
